MedicAlert and Garmin launch new product to help people with medical conditions get active
New combination medical ID and activity tracker combines the best of both worlds, helping those with medical conditions achieve their fitness goals with less worry
September 30, 2015 (Toronto, Ontario) – A new strategic relationship between MedicAlert Foundation Canada and Garmin®, a leading manufacturer of GPS navigation and wireless devices, is geared towards helping Canadians with medical conditions live an active lifestyle
This collaboration will see Garmin’s popular vivofit® 2 activity tracker1 fitted with a MedicAlert medical ID. Equipping the vivofit 2 with the MedicAlert emblem means Canadians will now be able to enjoy the peace-of-mind that comes with carrying Canada’s most respected medical ID alongside the benefits of an activity tracker.
“We know that one in three Canadians live with a medical condition. And we know that the fear or worry about a medical condition can be a major barrier that stops people from being active,” explains Robert Ridge, President and CEO, MedicAlert Foundation Canada. “Our goal through this partnership is to encourage Canadians with a medical condition to get healthier.”
“Collaborating with Garmin and the vivofit 2 is just the beginning,” Ridge elaborated. “We are looking to broaden this strategic relationship to other Garmin products, while also continuing to develop innovative partnerships with other organizations to meet the ever changing healthcare needs of today’s consumers.”
“The Garmin Vivofit 2 is designed to track your physical activity and help you achieve your fitness goals, whether big or small,” says Allison Swelin, Manager, Wellness Sales and Marketing, Garmin. “Garmin’s innovative features provide you with the information, insight and motivation you need to keep raising the bar on your fitness, while the MedicAlert emblem on the band is your assurance that you’re protected in the event of an emergency.”
vivofit 2 provides a daily step goal and shows your steps, calories, distance and time of day on its easy-to-read display. It is the only activity tracker with a 1+ year battery life, backlit display and move bar with audible alerts that reminds you when you’ve been inactive. It also monitors your sleep stats for later review online. vivofit 2 automatically syncs to Garmin Connect™, a free online community where you can join fitness challenges and save, plan and share your progress.
This product is perfect for anyone looking to pursue an active lifestyle; caregivers looking for a product that will encourage their loved ones to get up and get going; or adults and children living with medical conditions who have been advised to exercise, but have been hesitant to do so because of their circumstance. Paramedics and other first responders across Canada have been trained to check for the official MedicAlert emblem when responding to calls. Research shows that 95% of first responders recalled MedicAlert as the first brand that comes to mind when asked about medical IDs.
The price for a MedicAlert equipped Vivofit 2 is CAD139.
